UNDERSTAND THE REEL

What to know before you buy.

The Makaira LBS is built around a specific problem: controlling a long, demanding fight from shore. Its 125 mm handle arm and T-bar knob are meaningful changes for that job. The 80 is the topless version, providing access to manage line; Okuma’s detailed feature list identifies crossbars on the 50W, 80W and 130. The 50W weighs 65 oz, the 80 climbs to 112.1 oz, and the 130 reaches 167 oz. Buy the capacity and handling you need, not simply the highest model number.

Published specifications, not test measurements. Maximum drag is not a recommended fishing setting.

The appeal

  • Extended 125 mm handle for leverage
  • Four exact sizes with distinct capacities
  • 80 topless frame gives access for manual line control

The compromise

  • Substantial weight compared with casting-oriented tackle
  • Wide models require careful manual line lay
  • Manufacturer 50W low-gear ratio/retrieve figures need clarification

Who should consider it?

Experienced land-based shark anglers matching a dedicated rod, line capacity and fighting system to the intended fishery.

Buying used? What to check.

Confirm exact generation, retrieve hand, spool, service history, internal corrosion, and all modifications. “Refurbished” needs a named refurbisher and a written description of the work and warranty. A used price is not comparable with a new manufacturer price.

Sizes & specifications

The 50W lists 1,000 yd of 130 lb braid. The 80 lists 1,000 yd of 200 lb braid, while the wider 80W increases that to 1,200 yd; the 130 lists 1,300 yd. These are line estimates, not guaranteed casting distance or safe working drag. The published full-drag maximum is not a recommended routine setting.

All four LBS variants verified independently: 50W, 80, 80W, 130. The detailed feature list distinguishes 80 topless from crossbar 50W/80W/130, overriding the page’s broad topless description. The 50W lists 1.3:1 low gear but 11.9 in low retrieve; confirm these conflicting figures with Okuma before purchase.
