UNDERSTAND THE REEL

What to know before you buy.

SpeedMaster II offers a practical route into two-speed lever-drag fishing. Sizes 8 and 10 are the compact end, 12 and 16 increase capacity and published drag, and 20 and 25 bring larger spools with lower low gears. A metal HAGANE body, Cross Carbon drag and Super Free Spool form the foundation. The supplied alternate drag cam on 20II and 25II is intended for monofilament setups. Buy the size that carries the required line with reserve; buying the biggest one simply adds bulk to every drop.

Published specifications, not test measurements. Maximum drag is not a recommended fishing setting.

The appeal

  • High and low gear on every listed size
  • Alternate mono drag cam on 20II/25II

The compromise

  • Right-hand retrieve in this US range
  • Larger sizes add weight and bulk

Who should consider it?

Boat anglers building an offshore two-speed outfit at a more approachable price.

Buying used? What to check.

Confirm exact generation, retrieve hand, spool, service history, internal corrosion, and all modifications. “Refurbished” needs a named refurbisher and a written description of the work and warranty. A used price is not comparable with a new manufacturer price.

Sizes & specifications

8/10: compact live-bait or bottom outfits after checking capacity. 12/16: intermediate offshore capacity. 20/25: larger capacity and 2.3:1 low gear for loaded winding. Set actual drag to the line, knots and rod, not the maximum rating.

All 6 configurations listed on the checked US manufacturer product page. Capacities are manufacturer nominal values; actual fill varies by line diameter. Handedness is left unknown where the specification drawer does not state it. No performance testing or current discount is claimed. The linked US technical chart is used where shop drawer entries are incomplete or conflict; confirm exact spool generation before purchase.
