Separate casting from trolling

A spinning reel for casting to fish and a conventional reel in a trolling spread are not equivalent alternatives. Start with the technique, rod, intended line class, and expected fish size.

The working shortlist

Fathom II 25NLD2 and SpeedMaster 16II make a useful conventional research pair, but are not identical in capacity. International 16VISX and Tiagra 30 represent different offshore configurations again. Their number badges do not make them the same size.

Two ratios are not two drag settings

Two-speed gearing changes retrieve characteristics. Lever-drag presets and working drag still need correct setup. Follow manufacturer instructions and get tackle-shop or captain input for a heavy offshore system.

Budget for the complete system

Allow for braid or mono, backing, leaders, rod, service, and the rigging appropriate to the technique. A less expensive reel with the right configuration can be a better purchase than a flagship with the wrong spool or ratio.
